Measuring Your Head at Home

If you can’t make it to the shop, here’s how we’ll do this right.

A true custom hat is shaped to your head in person. That’s always the standard here.

When you visit the shop, we measure more than just size. We account for head shape, contours, and pressure points so the hat sits exactly as it should. If traveling to Belle Fourche isn’t possible, we can still build your hat carefully to your measured size and chosen design.

It will be custom made.
It will not be custom fit to your individual head shape.

If you’re comfortable with that difference, here’s how to measure correctly.

What You’ll Need

• A seamstress ruler (flexible cloth measuring tape)
• A mirror
• A second person if available
• Good lighting

Make sure your seamstress ruler includes 1/8″ markings.

Where the Tape Should Sit

The seamstress tape should sit where your hat naturally rests.

• One finger width above the eyebrows
• One finger width above the tops of the ears
• Around the widest part of the back of the head

The tape should remain level all the way around.

If it leaves a mark, it’s too tight.
If it slides down, it’s too loose.

Do not measure high on the crown of your head. A hat does not sit there.

Watch Jack Measure It

If you’d rather see it done than read about it, here it is.

Demonstrated in the shop in Belle Fourche.

Jack demonstrates exactly where the tape should sit and how snug it should feel.

Measure Three Times

Measure your head three separate times.

Remove the seamstress ruler completely between each measurement and start again.

Write each number down to the nearest 1/8″.

If your measurements differ by more than 1/2″, measure again.
Large differences usually mean the tape slipped.

Consistency matters.

Submit all three numbers below.
We’ll calculate the final average here in the shop.

Photographs We’ll Need

Please upload two clear photos.

1. Straight-on portrait

2. Full side profile

Guidelines:

• No hat
• Neutral expression
• Hair worn as you normally wear it under a hat
• Plain background if possible
• Camera at eye level
• Avoid wide-angle distortion

These photos help us understand your overall head profile.
They do not replace an in-person fitting.

An Important Distinction

When you visit Belle Fourche, we measure size and shape.

We map how your head is built.
We account for pressure points.
We build the hat around you.

That level of shaping cannot be replicated remotely.

A remotely measured hat will be built carefully to your submitted size and design — crown, brim, material, and finish — but it will not be shaped to your individual head contours.

If you want the full custom fitting experience, we encourage you to visit the shop.

If not, we’ll build your hat carefully from the information you provide.

Submit Your Measurements

Please enter each measurement exactly as taken.

Do not average them — we’ll calculate the final size here in the shop.
