About Weather Hat Company

A Legacy with Western Roots

The Weather Hat Company name first appeared in 1912, with previous chapters in Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota. While the business changed hands and locations over the years the core of the craft remained: hats made to fit, built to last, and shaped with intention.

Today, that legacy continues under Jack’s hand. The process is still slow, the fit is still personal, and the work is still real.

One Hat at a Time. One Hundred Years of Tradition.

Weather Hat Company is a custom hat shop based in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, where Western craftsmanship is still done the right way — one hat at a time, by hand.

Owner and hatmaker Jack Scholl grew up around hats — shaping crowns, reshaping brims, and paying attention to the small details that make a good hat fit just right. It was never a job, just something he loved to do. That early interest stayed with him, eventually leading to formal training in Montana, where he learned the traditional tools and techniques of the trade.

In 2002, friends tipped Jack off to something unusual — a complete set of professional hat-making equipment packed away in Upton, Wyoming, along with the rights to the Weather Hat Company name. He bought the equipment and the business, moved it to Belle Fourche, and opened the shop that continues today.

Since then, Jack has shaped every hat by hand — one at a time, the way it’s always been done.

The Corgis of Weather Hat Co.

Inside each custom Weather Hat Co. liner, you’ll find a distinctive motif: a vintage-inspired portrait of Jack and a corgi — that’s Lucky, Jack’s beloved first shop dog. The image, showing Jack and Lucky gazing at one another, has become an iconic mark of the brand — a tribute to their inseparable bond and to the spirit of the shop.

Lucky was followed by a small line of loyal shop companions, including Rocco and Ozzy, each leaving their mark on the daily rhythm of the workspace. Today, that legacy continues with Duke — the energetic, belly-rub-loving corgi who proudly patrols the shop as if it were his own (because, well, he mostly believes it is).

If you’ve stopped by recently, you may also have met Ellie, often alongside Duke, greeting visitors and keeping watch. From Lucky to Rocco to Duke (and Ellie), the dogs of Weather Hat Co. are more than mascots — they’re part of the family, and part of the story woven into every hat we make.
