How Many Times Is Too Many?

April 24, 2026

Not every hat can be brought back the same way.

When someone brings one in for cleaning or a reblock, you don’t always know what’s already been done to it. Some hats have been worked on once or twice. Some have been worked on more than they should have been.

Every time a sweatband gets sewn in, it leaves holes behind. That’s just part of the process. But over time, those holes add up. The felt around the base of the crown starts to lose its strength.

That’s where you have to be careful.

When you block a hat, you’re putting it under tension—pulling it back into shape. If that felt has been weakened from too many passes on a machine, it won’t hold the same way it used to. Push it too far, and you can pull the brim right from the crown.

At that point, you’re not restoring it. You’re trying to keep it together.

That’s why every hat gets looked at before any work starts. If you’ve ever wondered what goes into that process, you can see it step by step on the How It’s Made page.

Some hats can take a full reblock and come back strong. Others need a lighter hand. And a few are better left alone—worn as they are, with the miles still in them.

If you’ve got a hat you’re thinking about bringing back, take a look at our Hat Services & Restoration work—or bring it in and let’s take a look.

A good hat is worn for a lifetime.
But it still has its limits.
