Every so often, a style comes back around that never really left.
The Grizzly is an unsanded felt — intentionally left with a natural, fuzzy texture instead of being smoothed down. It’s a look that feels honest, a little rugged, and very much rooted in Western history.

This style was made famous by Larry Mahan, champion bull rider and one of the most recognizable figures in rodeo. The Grizzly wasn’t about polish — it was about presence. Texture, depth, and character were part of the point.
Right now, Jack has several Biggar Grizzly Open Crowns in the shop, ready to be shaped. Open crown hats give us flexibility in how the final shape comes together, allowing the wearer to decide how traditional or personal they want the finished hat to be.
A Grizzly isn’t for everyone. It shows wear differently than a sanded felt and carries its age a little more openly. But for the right person, that’s exactly the appeal.
If you’ve been curious about the Grizzly — or remember them from years ago — stop by the shop.
We’re happy to talk through what works, what doesn’t, and whether this style fits how you actually wear your hat.
